Stroke occurs when there is an interruption of blood supply to a part of the brain, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. When this happens, brain cells begin to die within some few minutes causing damage to the brain.
Types of stroke:-Ischemic stroke occurs as a result of blocked arteries or blood vessels
-Hemorrhagic stroke occurs as a result of rupturing or bursting of an artery or a vessel causing bleeding -Transient Ischemic Attack or “mini stroke” is caused by a temporary disruption in the blood supply to part of the brain.
Risk factors include:-High Blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol level, cardiovascular diseases, family history of stroke, smoking/Alcoholism and diets high in saturated fats.
Clinical signs and symptoms include: Numbness/stiffness of one side of the body (paralysis), drooping face or facial paralysis, slurred speech, speech impairment, sudden severe headache, loss of coordination etc.
Prevention: Regular medical checkups, regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
